When I was young we consumed mostly paperbacks. Were cheaper (much cheaper) than other formats and, especially, there was a decline in the quality of the edition because of the price. Almost all publishers have a line of pocket and, some, became mythical: Bruguera, Alliance, Destination, Caralt ... In the world of science fiction spent three quarters of the same: Nebulae 2 nd Epoch, overseas were collections of pocket Super Fiction and MartÃnez Roca same thing.
That world died, the times changed, as always changing and as it should be, and the paperback editions became the background. However, those of my generation are accustomed to quality standards in design, typos, layout and even translation (maybe this section might be a bit more debatable). We bought a cheap product but met the same standards as more expensive. To some fudge, no buyer had accepted the excuse is that it is a paperback. We knew, and we accepted, which were smaller, were less bound and the paper was of lower quality, but otherwise, the paperback editions were as readable as the luxurious hardcover.
As I said, times changed and won another model editorial, also in science fiction. Prima the expensive large format book (although the cover is back) and, interestingly, has also become fashionable that quality is going to gargle. Read
science fiction in Spain is, to some extent, mourn. Errata campaigns for its wide, the layout is crazy, absolutely amateur design and decent translations of Alice's Mad Hatter. The oldest
we complain, we tore their clothes and do not understand anything. Others, however, seem to be more understanding (curiously, in this section are often the publishers themselves) and looking for excuses one after another: we are publishing small, practically the work is done by one person (or two or three), total for four cats who buy these things, for four dollars we earn, and you complain, ungrateful, over which we publish what no public ... And part fandom down, and stands beside him and "whiners" (like myself) stayed at the section of rare, old eccentric and crazy.
Well sorry, but no drink. If the 70-80 could do well in the twenty-first century should be much better. And, sorry, but size does not matter (it is an easy joke ...) Why? Why, even today, there are all like in a drugstore. Take, for example, a publishing medium (for the parameters of science fiction) and The Factory of Ideas is guilty of many of the ills we are talking about, it can be put in front of someone who does much better and with similar means, such as For Bibliopolis / Alamut.
Or go down to the very small field, which by its size automatically arouse sympathy. There is AJEC whose books are an example ... in the worst sense of the word (and again I speak of criteria of quality editing of texts). For SWAT apologies have always been precisely that character and tiny craft. Well, sorry but no school. Why now has born a new publisher: NGC Fiction!, a priori equally sickly that SWAT and it happens that your first book (the very estimable "Fragments Bubble") is a resounding professionalism. It has nothing to envy the greatest and most famous publishers like Seix Barral, Chair, Anagram, Alfaguara, Tusquets, Mondadori or anything else that passes through our heads.
So, I'm sorry but moral alibi is over the size or character of the geek market. If you want you can do things, otherwise excuses. You can be professional or not, that simple. Why, yes, at the time of charging the book, curiously, all charge you the same, good or bad editing. And to Mr. Pocket I fear that all arguments end up losing much of their weight.
